Schumacher shifts focus to IndyCar as Formula 1 prospects diminish.

29 September 2025 - 08:19 Mick Schumacher is set to test an Indycar for the first time next month, as his opportunities to return to Formula 1 diminish. After missing out on a Cadillac seat for 2026—where the team chose Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez—Schumacher has received an invitation from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing to participate in a test at Indianapolis on October 13.

"I am very much looking forward to my first test in an Indycar," said the 26-year-old. "It’s well-known that I am a big fan of single-seater racing, so this first Indycar test will be a memorable experience. I’m really excited to drive a car where I can see my wheels."

Team co-owner Bobby Rahal expressed his enthusiasm: "I’ve followed Mick’s career, as well as his father's, so the idea of seeing him in one of our race cars is thrilling. Clearly, he possesses a lot of talent, which should provide him with a good starting point."

Schumacher’s career has stagnated since Haas parted ways with him at the end of 2022. He served as a reserve driver for Mercedes before joining Alpine’s WEC program full-time, where he has achieved multiple podium finishes. German sources suggest that Indycar may provide Schumacher with the opportunity to revitalize his single-seater career. "This is a chance for Mick to demonstrate his abilities in a challenging series," noted the SID news agency. DPA mentioned that the Indy test "brings hopes of a future participation in the Indy 500."

Auto Motor und Sport highlighted that this move is about gaining visibility: "In endurance racing, capturing attention is challenging. To regain some visibility in the premier class, Schumacher has shown interest in Indycar."

Schumacher would become part of a group of former F1 drivers—like Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso—who have ventured into American-style open-wheel racing. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen made it clear that he is not considering a similar path. "Le Mans, yes, but I'm not interested in the Triple Crown," the Dutch driver stated. "I enjoy watching Indycar, but I don’t feel the need to drive it myself."
