Oscar Piastri: That's the best I could have hoped for.
Oscar Piastri handled the task in qualifying at the Singapore circuit better than his teammate, but only managed third, 0.366 seconds off pole. Lando Norris, his McLaren teammate, will have to start from fifth.
Oscar Piastri (3rd): "Of course I'd have liked to deliver a higher result, but I don't think our car would have allowed me to put in a lap four tenths quicker and take pole. So in the end I'm more or less satisfied.
I think the weekend has so far gone pretty well, and we have managed to gradually build up pace. In any case I had a decent qualifying, avoiding any issues — that's the most I could have hoped for.
I just don't think we had a sufficiently good pace today, and that surprised us a bit. The practice results were very close, but I believe that before qualifying we were more or less confident in our abilities. So there's something for us to analyse — we need to work out where we're losing time.
The two previous rounds were not easy for us, so today's outcome wasn't such a big surprise, but I do believe that after the practice sessions it seemed like we had a chance of achieving higher results.
I hope we'll be able to make up positions, although it's very hard to overtake on this track. To do that you need a significant advantage in pace, so we'll see what we can do tomorrow."
Lando Norris (5th): "I had difficulties yesterday, but things are going better today. I probably didn't execute absolutely optimally today either, but there's no excuse for that.
Our rivals have clearly improved: Mercedes did a good job, and Red Bull also performed strongly at the two previous rounds, so there are no surprises there.
The Singapore round always plays out a bit oddly. We know we start to have problems whenever we can't get the front tyres working effectively. We've had quite a few issues with that since the start of the weekend.
I think we understand the reasons for the problems, and the explanation is simple: the front end of the car doesn't hold the track confidently enough — there's too much understeer — so we have to compromise on setup choices.
We're not quick enough at this track, where qualifying is the most important part, and that's frustrating. There are always chances to recover during the race, but they're not that great. Tomorrow we'll have to work hard."
