Verstappen and Hamilton criticize the proposal to require cooling vests.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have both expressed their disapproval of the FIA's decision to mandate the use of cockpit cooling vests in Formula 1's new "heat hazard" races. The Singapore GP this weekend is the first event to be classified under this heat category, which enables the FIA to enforce specific cooling protocols. While the vest is optional for 2025, drivers opting not to wear one must add ballast to balance their weight.

Verstappen conveyed his opposition to making the vest compulsory. "I’m not planning to use it because I believe it should be a driver’s choice," he stated to Viaplay. "Right now it is indeed a choice this season, but next season it isn’t—at least not currently. I strongly disagree with that. It’s a bit absurd. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal safety and comfort."

The Dutch driver described the vest as uncomfortable and ineffective. "The heat doesn’t affect me that much, and it gets warm anyway. A bit of sweating is acceptable, and the vest itself warms up after 15 to 20 minutes, so it’s pointless," he remarked.

Verstappen also dismissed the FIA's claim that the vest enhances safety. "We could discuss many aspects that could be improved for safety, such as the design of pit entries in certain areas. I think those issues should take precedence over a vest in the car, which I find uncomfortable."

Hamilton, another multiple world champion, supported Verstappen's viewpoint. "In my view, this should never be imposed on a driver," the Ferrari driver commented. "They claim it’s a safety measure, but no driver has ever died from overheating, except in instances of cars catching fire in the past," he laughed.

"It’s becoming quite absurd. This should be our choice whether we use it or not. I appreciate that it’s available and that efforts are being made to improve it. It might indeed help in extremely hot situations. However, it should never be made mandatory to wear the vest."

Hamilton acknowledged that he "might" wear the vest on Sunday, contrary to his former Mercedes teammate George Russell, who confirmed he will be wearing it while starting from pole position. Championship leader Oscar Piastri stated he is still undecided, saying, "I think the initiative is good, but as Max said, it’s important to have the choice to use it or not, as there are both advantages and disadvantages."
