Giancarlo Minardi on the Singapore Grand Prix

In a column on his official website, former team owner Giancarlo Minardi summed up the Singapore Grand Prix…

Giancarlo Minardi: “In Singapore, McLaren won the Constructors’ Championship for the second year running, and the race was won by George Russell of Mercedes. His teammate Kimi Antonelli confirmed the team’s success by finishing fifth – Mercedes consolidated second place in the Constructors’ Championship, while Ferrari are forced to look over their shoulder at the pursuing Red Bull Racing. Right now the Maranello team is only fourth in terms of pace.

Of course, more was expected from the drivers in the papaya‑coloured cars, but by getting onto the podium, Lando Norris gained three points on his teammate, keeping the championship battle alive. I don’t think Verstappen can still be considered a title contender, even if, as usual, he forces others to give their all, especially now that his car is fast again. If Tsunoda can consistently score points, they could well challenge Ferrari for third in the Constructors’ Championship.

I think Ferrari made the right decision to put on Soft tyres in an attempt to catch Antonelli. A brake problem ruined Hamilton’s race, but they still wouldn’t have finished higher than fifth.

Williams’ performance deserves applause: Sainz started last and earned a point for tenth place. On a track where overtaking is virtually impossible, his strategy and driving were top‑class.

Alonso’s result is equally positive: he’s always entertaining on the team radio and decisive on track. Thanks to Hamilton’s penalty he finished seventh. I’m sure Adrian Newey had a hand in that too.”
