"We will consider both drivers' viewpoints."
McLaren may have clinched the 2025 Constructors’ Championship in Singapore, but tensions between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris within the team are escalating. Piastri’s frustration was evident on the radio after Norris pushed him wide on the opening lap, labeling the maneuver as "not very team-like." This displeasure was heightened when McLaren chose not to swap their positions. He later interrupted team communications during CEO Zak Brown’s post-race congratulations, fueling speculation of an internal conflict.
Team principal Andrea Stella defended the situation, stating the silence was benign. "We instructed Oscar to shut off the engine upon arrival, and then the entire car after five seconds. This action also disconnects FOM communication," he explained. Stella downplayed Piastri’s lack of participation in McLaren’s official podium celebrations, noting, "It was an impromptu celebration. Oscar was engaged with the media, and several team members didn't have time to make it."
Nonetheless, he acknowledged the need for careful handling of the rivalry between the drivers. "Our review must be thorough and analytical," the Italian stated. "We will take into account both drivers’ perspectives and reach a shared conclusion. If anyone feels that the rules are being enforced unevenly, it could result in rule breaches and undermine the entire system. Such discussions are crucial at this time."
For his part, Norris brushed aside Piastri’s criticism. "If you blame me for placing my car in a significant gap on the inside, then Formula 1 might not be the right fit for you," he remarked.
European media have picked up on the discord. Spain’s AS reported that "the team celebration seemed insincere" and that McLaren might strengthen its controversial 'papaya rules' to maintain control. France’s L’Equipe referred to Piastri’s terse media comments as "icy," while Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport stated that the internal conflict "appears to be genuinely escalating." Sky Deutschland’s Ralf Schumacher noted, "Oscar is displaying more nerves - he’s more sensitive now," and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff predicted "a scenario where elbows will come into play more."
Austria’s Kleine Zeitung encapsulated the rising speculation with the headline: "McLaren faces turmoil despite championship title - has Oscar Piastri reached his limit with his own team?"
