Norris: My aggression paid off.
Lando Norris is happy that the team has once again won the Constructors' Championship, and has no regrets…
Question: Lando, are you happy with the car this weekend?
Lando Norris: Yes. It's a pity we didn't get the most out of qualifying. I think we understand why that happened, and there are things we'd do differently now. That's the only reason we couldn't win this race.
In the race I couldn't pass Max. He didn't make any mistakes, and it's very difficult to follow another car closely on this circuit.
Question: Did the damage to the front wing affect the handling?
Lando Norris: I don't know. But not much.
Question: You had a good start. Tell us about the first ten seconds of the race…
Lando Norris: To be honest, I don't remember. I got away confidently. The right side of the grid had better grip. Crossing the start line I was in a good position to avoid getting caught up in an incident at the exit of turn one and the entry to turn two.
Oscar and I were side by side, parts of the track were wet and slippery – I clipped the rear of Max's car and had to adjust my line slightly.
Speaking about the two positions gained, the start went well – during the race I probably couldn't have won them back. So my aggression paid off and produced a result.
Question: Aggression towards your teammate?
Lando Norris: I touched Max's car; it wasn't aggression towards my teammate.
Question: Did you only hold Oscar up because you hit Max?
Lando Norris: Yes.
Question: There are six races left in the season. McLaren has won the Constructors' Championship for the tenth time, and for the first time since 1991 has won it two years in a row. What does that mean to you?
Lando Norris: The Constructors' Championship is great. And the second in a row is just as important as the first, if you remember where we were only three years ago. We've overtaken all the teams in terms of car development, although doing so was harder than ever — with lots of restrictions, less wind-tunnel time, a budget cap.
At a time when dominating should be harder than ever, the team built the best car in the championship for us. Oscar and I did everything from our side to get the result the team needed — we motivated each other and performed consistently every weekend. There is nothing like that at any other team. I think we, the drivers, are also very proud of that.
I've been with McLaren from the very start. Back then it was a completely different time and place than now. Remembering the failures and seeing our progress, the teamwork, the changing atmosphere, the leadership of Zak and Andrea — all of this has changed the situation and made us the best team in the world. Few can say that.
Question: Since there was contact with Oscar at the start, and the team said there shouldn't be contact during the race, were you worried you might be asked to give the position back, or were you sure that wouldn't happen?
Lando Norris: To be honest, I haven't watched the replay yet. I might watch it and decide I could have done something differently.
If you're blaming me for taking the inside line and taking the gap that opened up, any F1 driver would have done the same. I slightly misjudged the distance to Max, but that's racing. Nothing else happened, and I'm sure I would have ended up ahead of Oscar anyway, because I was on the clean inside line and he was on the dirty outside. I'll watch the footage to see if I could have done anything better.
The last thing I want is to collide with my teammate, also because you'll then pester me with questions. So yes, I'll look at what I can do next time. But the FIA obviously judged everything to be fine, and so did the team.
Question: Now that the team has won the Constructors' Championship, will the rules of your fight with your teammate change?
Lando Norris: Everything will stay the same. We could and can race each other on track. It's been like that all season.
