Mick Schumacher remains undeterred by concerns regarding safety in Indycar racing.
"Safety is assured only to a certain degree."
Mick Schumacher expresses that he is not concerned about the risks associated with oval racing as he comes closer to a potential full-time move to Indycar in 2026. The 26-year-old German showcased his skills during his inaugural test with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing at Indianapolis this week. Although he only drove on the road course, Schumacher made it clear that he plans to participate in the entire championship if he joins the American series. "If I were to select something, I would dedicate myself fully to it," he stated.
Several individuals, including his uncle Ralf Schumacher, have advised caution regarding the high-speed ovals in Indycar, which have been considered particularly dangerous by European drivers. Even Mick’s father, Michael Schumacher, had voiced safety concerns about the series during his time in F1. However, the former Haas driver maintains that he is not deterred by these worries.
"I'm not concerned," he told journalists in Indianapolis. "I've never driven on an oval, so I can't comment much further on that. But up to now, I haven’t encountered anything that would dissuade me."
"Safety is certainly a major priority for everyone," Schumacher noted. "Indycar has implemented numerous modifications and adjustments to enhance safety, and I’m confident they will keep improving. Safety can only be guaranteed to a certain extent given the high speeds involved, but I believe all necessary precautions are being taken."
He also feels that his driving instincts will be advantageous. "If you have a solid feel for a stable car and a good awareness of when you're nearing the limit, you'll perform well," he remarked.
The former Haas driver acknowledged that a decision regarding his future is imminent. "It won’t take me long to make a choice," he confirmed, discounting the possibility of a split schedule between Europe and the US. "I don’t want to engage in two different disciplines."
