Montoya: Rumours about Piastri may be coming from Red Bull
After the Singapore Grand Prix, rumors appeared in the European press that the leader of the drivers' standings, Oscar Piastri, is considering ending his cooperation with McLaren at the end of 2026. Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya believes such rumors may be spread by McLaren's rivals to destabilize the team.
Juan Pablo Montoya: "The main question is whether such stories are just adding fuel to the fire. After all, it's a great way to create problems for McLaren. The situation is a bit like how Toto Wolff acted with Max Verstappen. Did he really have a chance to sign Max? Who knows, but it made the headlines.
The story about Piastri and Ferrari could, for example, come from Red Bull. Someone at Red Bull could very well have decided, 'This is a great leak to add fuel to the fire and destabilize McLaren.'
But at the same time, if you think Oscar is really a good driver and you know other teams want to get him, it's a great way to tell McLaren on Oscar's behalf: 'If you want to work with me, then show me some respect.' The problem is that for McLaren today the team is more important than the driver."
Montoya added that since the fate of the Constructors' Championship has already been decided, McLaren should allow their drivers to fight for the title among themselves: "McLaren should allow them to fight each other. Of course, they must remain a united team and act in its interests, since the main goal is the team's victory. And, in my view, Andrea Stella has done a fantastic job of keeping everything intact. But in races they need to be allowed to act more flexibly.
McLaren understand that working together for a common goal is an excellent long-term strategy, but they find themselves in a really difficult situation. Both of their drivers understand that this may be their only chance in their careers to become world champion.
None of them want to leave Abu Dhabi thinking, 'I was too polite. I was going to overtake that guy, but I didn't do it so as not to upset anyone.' That's not how Formula 1 works. Here you have to go all the way. Fight hard, but with respect for each other, because next year they'll still have to work together."
