Russell: The opportunity to win is more important than money

The story of George Russell’s contract extension with Mercedes dragged on for quite a while, there was much talk about it, but on Wednesday the team finally officially confirmed the lineup for next year.

According to the British driver, it is with the Stuttgart-based works team that he has the best chance of the title, though he indicated that negotiations over financial matters were tougher than usual.

George Russell: “I’m very glad to be continuing to race for Mercedes. But the truth is that even if every team had vacancies for next year and I could choose, I believe it would still be Mercedes where I have the best chance of winning the championship. And the opportunity to win races is more important to me than money, participating in sponsor activities or anything else.

I want to win and that’s what I’m fighting for — I have nothing more to add. I suppose results are the most important thing for any driver. At least that’s my case: I can sleep soundly at night when I know I’m performing at a high level. That’s what keeps any driver going in his career.

I intend to stay at Mercedes for the long term, and our goal is to fight for the championship in 2026. As for the terms of my contract, you have to take into account the specifics of the situation and all the circumstances related to the team and to me.

If Toto had wanted, he could have set much tougher conditions, but I think he recognizes that drivers who deliver strong results should be rewarded. That’s why there’s a satisfied smile on my face now: I was very pleased with the offer made to me. I consider it a bonus, although my main goal is to have a fast car at my disposal.”
