Charles Leclerc: I made a mistake and almost ended up in the wall during the sprint.
At the start of the sprint in Austin Charles Leclerc passed Lewis Hamilton, taking advantage of the chaos in the first corner. However, during the race Charles went off track, which allowed his teammate to close up to attacking distance and make the overtake. After the finish both Ferrari drivers summed up the sprint.
Lewis Hamilton (4th): "I wouldn’t say the car behaved better today — it handled the same as in sprint qualifying. But the pace was not bad, and over the race distance the car handled slightly better than in qualifying.
I managed to avoid drama in the first corner, although I didn’t place the car very well. I saw Alonso on the inside and moved further right, opening the door for Charles. There’s still a lot to improve, but otherwise the start was not bad.
It’s a shame I couldn’t get close enough to fight for third. But I’m hoping for a more successful performance in qualifying, so fingers crossed."
Charles Leclerc (5th): "It’s better to be overtaken by your teammate than by someone else. To be honest, the car felt a lot better today. Unfortunately I made a mistake and almost ended the sprint in the wall in the Turn 5–6 complex. After that Lewis passed me.
After the mistake it was hard to recover, although the pace was not bad. That’s good, but starting from tenth, if nothing had happened in the first corner, I wouldn’t have finished in the position I did.
Now we need to focus on qualifying and do a better job."
