Piastri: I still believe I can win the title.
Oscar Piastri is confident that his experience fighting for titles in junior series will help him now, as he leads the world championship, but his advantage continues to shrink rapidly.
Last weekend in Austin was fairly unfortunate for him — Oscar retired in the very first seconds of Saturday's sprint, and many tend to consider him the main culprit for the start-line incident; in Sunday's Grand Prix he finished only fifth.
Meanwhile Max Verstappen won both races of the American round, taking all 33 points, while Lando Norris finished second, which allowed him to reduce the gap to his McLaren teammate in the drivers' standings to 14 points.
However, Piastri has been in similar situations before — notably in 2020 in Formula 3 his rivalry with Logan Sargeant and Theo Pourchaire lasted until the final round of the season, yet the Australian won the series championship at the age of 19.
"I'm simply trying to understand whether we're able to prepare the car to the best possible standard each weekend, and over a race distance it's still pretty good," RacingNews365 quotes Oscar as saying. "But in qualifying trim over the last few rounds, including this past weekend, it has been harder to drive for some reason.
"I couldn't find a way to suit the car at all; I was uncomfortable behind the wheel, and that became the main problem. The only thing we have to do is analyze everything thoroughly and figure out what we can do.
"I've had experience fighting for a title before when the situation was even more acute than it is now, so I have reason to believe I can still turn things around for the better. I still believe I can win this championship.
"Last weekend was tough, my advantage has been reduced over the past few rounds, but championships are won with pace, and it won't help to be looking at the points and calculating whether I can extend my lead over rivals or whether it will shrink.
"The higher the pace, the more points I'll score, and that's the only thing that matters right now."
