Hülkenberg: The team did an excellent job.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix was the fourth consecutive race in which the Sauber team scored points. Nico Hülkenberg, starting 11th, had a very decent race and finished ninth, completing the distance with a single pit stop.
But Gabriel Bortoleto was unlucky again at the very start of the race: as in Brazil, he could not avoid contact with Lance Stroll's Aston Martin, and this time the Sauber driver was found to be at fault for the incident at turn 1 and was penalized for it. He will drop five places on the grid for the Qatar Grand Prix and will also receive two penalty points on his super licence.
Jonathan Wheatley, team principal: "It was another weekend with mixed results for our team. Before the start we decided to run the race with a single pit stop and to do the first stint on hard tyres — we also had a contingency plan in case problems arose due to tyre degradation.
But the Las Vegas track surface has unique characteristics, so all weekend we devoted maximum attention to working with the tyres. Unfortunately, Gabriel made a braking error into the first corner, which led to the incident that caused him to retire from the race and also to be penalized.
On the other hand, we saw another excellent performance from Nico, who once again scored points. After the Las Vegas Grand Prix Sauber have 64 points, and we've slightly reduced the gap to our main rivals in the Constructors' Championship."
Nico Hülkenberg (9th): "We scored a couple more points today, and I think we can be fairly satisfied with that result. It's probably the maximum we could have expected today. Everyone who finished ahead of us both started ahead and was capable of a higher pace, so we did everything right and that allowed us to take ninth place.
We executed the one-stop strategy effectively, tyre degradation was moderate, and the team did an excellent job. We ran the first stint on hards confidently, although we had to put in a bit of effort in the opening laps when there was tight racing on track, but it all worked out for us.
We scored important points for the team, and since the battle in the Constructors' Championship remains very tight, we have something to fight for."
Gabriel Bortoleto (did not finish): "First of all I want to apologise to Lance. It was my fault, although I got a good start and tried to make a move on the inside line, but I misjudged my braking point by a few metres and then it was too late — I couldn't slow down properly.
My car carried on too far straight, and I couldn't make the corner, so it ended with contact with Stroll's car. I'm sorry it turned out that way — the weekend had been going well up to qualifying, but then I made a mistake on the first lap which led to my retirement.
In the remaining two races I have to try to pull everything together, because if I don't manage to finish there either, I won't be able to gain the experience on these tracks that I so badly need. Today's incident will be a lesson for me, and before the next weekend I'll make sure to get my mindset right so I can return to the level of performance I was at recently."
