Schumacher welcomes IndyCar participation despite worries from his family.

Mick Schumacher expressed he is "really happy" to be returning to single-seater racing following the confirmation of his 2026 IndyCar switch, which was announced a day earlier than planned after his new team unintentionally published the press release before retracting it. "That was a bit exciting," Schumacher said with a smile while addressing the media.

This transition represents a significant milestone in the 26-year-old's career, occurring despite persistent concerns voiced by his uncle Ralf, who reiterated his worries about the dangers of oval racing. "I still view IndyCar as very dangerous," Ralf told Sky Deutschland following the announcement. "But I understand his perspective—he’s young and eager to prove himself. I’m hopeful and wish for his safety. It's a fact that the speeds in oval racing are exceptionally high, and many have underestimated that."

Mick, on the other hand, remains firm that his enthusiasm for racing single-seaters outweighed the potential risks and the uncertainties regarding further opportunities in Formula 1. "From what I gathered, I was in the running for the seat until the end," Schumacher noted when asked about recent speculation connecting him to Cadillac. "They chose a different path—which is fine," said the former Haas driver, who has also departed from Alpine’s WEC program. "This made me ponder whether I wanted to continue pursuing F1 or shift to competing in single-seaters, which I enjoy. Thankfully, the chance with RLL arose, and I’m genuinely pleased to be here now."

Schumacher mentioned that the contract duration is flexible. Regarding the danger involved, he acknowledged the risks. "Certainly, you can’t overlook it—these speeds are intense, and the wheel-to-wheel battles are tough," he admitted. "But I willingly accept the risk for the joy of racing. Motorsport, by nature, is risky, and I don’t think one aspect is more perilous than another."

He also believes that moving to IndyCar does not preclude a return to Formula 1. "Formula 1 is a very unique world, yet it still involves formula cars," he stated. "I don't see why transitioning to IndyCar should close that door. It was simply intriguing for me to come back to formula racing."

Schumacher recently tested the car and found clarity in his decision. "For me, IndyCar was the best choice," he explained. "Through the test, I wanted to reassure myself and others that I could envision this as a long-term commitment. I'm really excited about it—it's a fantastic championship, and I can’t wait for the oval tests."

One possibility he considered was competing solely on road and street circuits, avoiding ovals altogether. "I had fruitful discussions with individuals who reacted both positively and skeptically," he revealed. "I formed my own views and made my decision."
