Bottas acknowledges that Mercedes is restricting Cadillac's preparations.

Valtteri Bottas states that his unusual year as a reserve for Mercedes has provided him with valuable insights for Cadillac's 2026 Formula 1 debut, but he acknowledges that it would have been beneficial to integrate earlier. In an interview with Goodwood.com, Bottas remarked that while his time away from racing has been useful, it has also been limiting.

"If I had the chance, I would have probably engaged more with the team, as there is much to prepare," he confessed when discussing his upcoming return to the grid with Cadillac. "I’m involved, but not as much as Checo since I can’t. I’m here with Mercedes. It is what it is."

Bottas, who last competed in 2024 for Sauber, will only be able to join Cadillac full-time after the Abu Dhabi finale due to his ongoing commitments with Mercedes. In the meantime, Sergio Perez has been testing a 2023 Ferrari while Cadillac’s race team gets up to speed.

The Finnish driver mentioned that he has remained involved in important discussions. "Concerning key meetings and crucial information, we’ve had those talks," Bottas explained. "Mercedes is still my employer, and I need to be ready each weekend, just in case. However, I utilize my free time wisely, working towards the future."

He expressed that his reserve role, including tire tests and monitoring operational channels, has given him a better understanding of team dynamics. "I’ve been observing how everything functions and listening to all the channels," he said. "I possess much more knowledge than I ever had before. This can truly assist when joining a team that is starting from scratch."

Although he recognizes that the first year with Cadillac will be challenging, he is prepared to take on the challenge. "It’s going to be tough to start from nothing," Bottas stated. "We need to be realistic. But I’m ready."

The 10-time race winner mentioned that his year away has heightened his motivation. "It’s deepened my respect for the sport and the drivers. Next year, I’ll feel much luckier and prouder to be on the grid than I probably would have been without a year of non-racing."
