Yuki Tsunoda is not ready for the role of reserve driver.

Before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Red Bull plans to announce the line-ups of its two teams — Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. There are no questions regarding Max Verstappen, while four drivers — Yuki Tsunoda, Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad — are vying for the three remaining vacancies.

According to the Dutch publication GPBlog, Hadjar will be Verstappen's teammate next season. Arvid Lindblad is guaranteed a seat at Racing Bulls, and his teammate is to be chosen in the coming days between Lawson and Tsunoda.

Red Bull hopes that the driver left without a race seat will become their reserve driver next season; however, that option is definitely not acceptable to Tsunoda. In Qatar, when asked about the possibility of becoming the third driver, Yuki said: “Honestly, I didn't even think about that option. I don't know, but I'm not planning anything like that.”

In effect, Tsunoda indicated that he will leave the Red Bull system if he loses his race seat. Earlier there was speculation that Yuki could become a reserve driver for Aston Martin, which will switch to Honda power units next year, but that is not an option either, at least if that is what Tsunoda meant when he said “something like that.”

There are no vacancies left in Formula E, so the real options for Yuki Tsunoda if he remains without a seat in Formula 1 are a move to IndyCar or Japan's Super Formula series.
