Domenicali confirms that additional sprint races will be introduced in 2027.
"I believe the drivers will appreciate it."
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has announced that starting in 2027, the sport will enhance its sprint format as part of a larger initiative to rejuvenate race weekends. "Will the number of sprints increase each year? Yes," he mentioned to Sky Italia during the 2025 finale in Abu Dhabi. "I think the drivers will enjoy it. They have a greater interest in racing and competing for points."
However, he acknowledged that the calendar is at its capacity. "Regarding the number of races per season, 24 Grands Prix is a reasonably balanced figure — although we still observe some people finding time to relax on the beach between races," he joked.
Domenicali indicated that F1 is working on a set of changes to present to teams and drivers, emphasizing that the issue of "nothing at stake on Fridays" remains a significant concern. "We're contemplating increasing the number of Sprint races starting in 2027 and potentially shortening the weekends. We will soon unveil the modifications agreed upon with the teams and drivers for the future."
Reflecting on the 2025 season, the F1 CEO remarked that the constantly changing championship scenario — "from Piastri, to Norris, to Verstappen" — has been a considerable success. "It’s been an exceptional year. The gaps between the cars have been minuscule, which is favorable for the sport and our platform."
He expressed satisfaction with the influence of the new generation of drivers. "I’m delighted with how the young drivers have drawn in younger fans that we hadn’t previously engaged," he noted. "This year, every one of them has showcased their talents. They grew up playing video games and using simulators, and in 2026, their ability to manage additional parameters will serve them well."
Regarding Ferrari’s struggles, the former team boss refrained from making external judgments but insisted that the company "has confidence in (Frederic) Vasseur and the drivers."
