Bottas joins Cadillac as the team leader clarifies the decision.
Valtteri Bottas concluded his responsibilities with Mercedes on Sunday night and was already at Cadillac’s Silverstone facility by Monday, where he began familiarization with the 2026 monocoque, initial seat-fitting, and integration discussions for the new project.
Team principal Graeme Lowdon shared with Ilta-Sanomat that choosing the Finnish driver was among the easiest decisions made during the entire program. "Valtteri's qualifying speed is well recognized," Lowdon remarked. "He has consistently outperformed his teammate throughout his career. Through him, we gain a reliable benchmark for the car's actual performance."
Given the uncertainty surrounding the 2026 regulation reset and each team's initial positioning, Cadillac sought a stable reference point in a driver. "Honestly, there’s no clarity on where each team will stand," he stated. "That’s why we require a driver whose performance remains consistent. Valtteri fits that description perfectly."
Lowdon, who has previously built a new team in F1, emphasized that Bottas' experience was a crucial consideration. "We needed a driver familiar with car development and capable of maintaining team cohesion amid changes. This would be a significant challenge for a less experienced driver."
He also stressed that Cadillac aims to showcase the authentic Bottas—the one recognized from his time at Sauber, known for his moustache, humor, and distinctive social media presence that has garnered him fan support. "We've witnessed his true personality emerge at Sauber, where he’s had more freedom to be himself. We won't limit that," Lowdon stated. "It’s essential for fans to see the genuine side of drivers. Valtteri can be himself."
Lowdon, who has known Bottas since his Formula 3 days, described him as "calm, analytical, and very collaborative,” qualities that are perfect for a team that has conducted over 9,000 job interviews this year while establishing multiple departments concurrently. "We are working on four or five projects simultaneously," he added. "We need a driver who can provide clarity and continuity. Valtteri does that effortlessly."
Bottas' popularity is another valuable aspect. "It's encouraging to witness the support that Valtteri and Sergio Perez receive. The engagement from fans energizes the team immensely."
Lowdon affirmed there’s no contradiction between Bottas’ relaxed online persona and his professionalism. "He communicates in a way that makes him approachable without compromising his work ethic or speed,” he explained. "This sport requires personalities." He also expressed confidence regarding Bottas’ limited driving experience in 2025. "His speed and experience won’t fade away," Lowdon remarked. "We will base our entire project on these qualities."
