For over thirty years, the A8 has symbolized the height of Audi’s ambitions. At a time when luxury brands globally were characterized by their flagship executive sedans—the Mercedes S-Class, the BMW 7 Series, and the Lexus LS—Ingolstadt needed its own model to set the standard. However, recently, Audi has not suggested any plans to replace the existing, fourth-generation A8, which debuted in 2017, indicating a recent announcement from the brand: Production of the A8 is concluding without a successor in the pipeline.

Audi confirmed to The Drive that it ceased taking orders for the A8 in Germany weeks ago on February 18. The sedan is still available in the U.S. at the moment, and it remains uncertain when order books will close here as well.

A spokesperson for the automaker stated that they "will only provide further details about a potential successor at a later date," leaving the model's future uncertain. While this does not definitively signal the end, if it is indeed the conclusion, it could take years before we know for sure.

Four generations of the Audi A8. Audi

Motor1 was the first to notice the A8's absence from Audi's German configurator early Friday. At one stage, a next-generation model was anticipated to closely resemble a production version of the 2021 Grandsphere concept—a large electric sedan featuring a new design language.

However, that plan appears to have been shelved, possibly due to Porsche's reported choice to postpone its K1 electric SUV, which could have shared a platform with a potential future A8. Of course, Audi has not confirmed any of this, but the turbulent developments in EV investments from the start of the decade until now have disrupted nearly every carmaker's plans.

Thus, Audi’s former flagship has come to an end, much like the Lexus LS. Hopefully, this will turn out to be merely a pause for the A8 driven by the reshuffle of the EV platform, and the company is still contemplating a successor. In the end, it may just be a slight delay. We remain hopeful.
