For over thirty years, the A8 has symbolized the peak of Audi's ambitions. During a period when luxury brands worldwide were characterized by their flagship executive sedans—like the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Lexus LS—Ingolstadt sought its counterpart to take the lead. However, recently, Audi has not indicated any plans to replace the current fourth-generation A8, which debuted in showrooms in 2017. This hints at the brand's latest announcement: the A8's production is concluding without a clear successor.
Audi confirmed to The Drive that it ceased taking orders for the A8 in Germany weeks ago on February 18. The sedan is still available for sale in the U.S. as of this writing, and it remains uncertain when our order books will close.
A spokesperson from the company mentioned that “further details regarding a possible successor will be communicated at a later date,” leaving the model's future uncertain. This does not definitively signify the end, but if it turns out to be so, it may be years before we know.
Four generations of the Audi A8. Audi
The A8's absence from Audi's German configurator was initially noted by Motor1 early Friday. At one time, a next-generation model was anticipated to closely resemble a production version of the 2021 Grandsphere concept—a sizable electric sedan featuring a fresh design language.
That plan appears to have been abandoned, possibly influenced by Porsche's reported decision to delay its K1 electric SUV, which a potential future A8 might have shared a platform with. Of course, Audi has not confirmed any of this, but the volatile nature of electric vehicle investments over the past few years has disrupted nearly every automaker's plans.
Consequently, Audi's former flagship model has come to a halt, similar to the Lexus LS. Hopefully, this situation will turn out to be a temporary pause for the A8 due to the electric vehicle platform upheaval, and the company is still considering a successor. In the end, it may just be delayed. We’ll stay hopeful.
