Additional races are in jeopardy as the crisis in Iran poses a threat to the F1 calendar.
"Nervousness in the paddock is increasing daily."
Formula 1 may encounter additional race cancellations beyond those in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia as tensions regarding the Iran crisis continue to rise.
As reported by Austria’s Osterreich newspaper, there are growing worries that more events later in the season could also be at risk.
"Formula 1 is concerned about the possibility of further grands prix being held," stated the report.
The Azerbaijan GP in Baku is reportedly under close examination due to its location near Iran.
"Osterreich reported that the country shares a border with Iran, which is causing major security concerns among teams and drivers."
However, the potential disruption might extend even further.
"The season finale is also in danger," the publication mentioned, indicating that races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi are being closely watched as the situation evolves.
Although officials have not yet made decisions regarding these later events, the atmosphere in the paddock is said to be watchful.
"Nervousness in the paddock is increasing daily, as escalation cannot be discounted," the report indicated.
The financial repercussions are already considerable, with the cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia estimated to have created a 100 million euro deficit for the sport's commercial rights holders.
"There will be no alternative venues in the short term," Osterreich observed.
If more races were to be removed from the calendar, the consequences could be dire.
"If Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi were also eliminated, the race calendar would be reduced to a meager 17 grands prix," the report cautioned.
