Wheatley leaves Audi, and Aston Martin announces a change in Newey's position.
"We don’t currently embrace the conventional Team Principal role."
Jonathan Wheatley has left Audi immediately, a departure that fuels speculation regarding a potential senior management shakeup at Aston Martin. Amid ongoing rumors, the German manufacturer confirmed his abrupt exit through an official statement, stating, "Due to personal reasons, Jonathan Wheatley will leave the team effective immediately." Audi added, "Mattia Binotto ... will continue to lead the team while also taking on additional responsibilities as Team Principal."
This news follows shortly after widespread reports linking Wheatley to Aston Martin, where owner Lawrence Stroll is restructuring the leadership following a challenging start to the Honda partnership. Although Aston Martin has not officially announced Wheatley’s joining, Stroll has made it clear that Adrian Newey will not function in a traditional team principal capacity. "We don’t currently adopt the conventional Team Principal role that’s seen elsewhere - this is intentional," Stroll stated. "As the most successful engineer in the sport's history, Adrian's main focus will be on strategic and technical leadership, where he truly shines."
Stroll referred to Newey as his "partner" and an "important shareholder," affirming that the Briton will remain pivotal to the team’s future but will concentrate on technical aspects rather than everyday management going forward. While Audi’s announcement cited "personal reasons" for Wheatley’s departure, Bild presents a more intricate scenario, suggesting tensions with Binotto and difficulties adjusting to life in Switzerland.
The German outlet reported that disagreements within Audi's dual leadership model had already raised concerns at the upper echelons, leading to a quick restructuring decision. The timing of Wheatley's departure has only heightened speculation that he may become a prominent candidate for a more traditional leadership position at Aston Martin, potentially reuniting him with Newey.
However, other possibilities are still being considered. Christian Horner has been rumored to have discussions with Stroll, although Newey is said to have pushed back against that idea. Moreover, former driver Allan McNish, who is already a significant figure at Audi, has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. Currently, Aston Martin maintains that it will not address "rumors and speculation."
