Andretti: We need to set ambitious goals for ourselves.
In Cadillac F1, it was initially understood that the debut season would not be easy, and it is unlikely that anyone expected Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, despite all their experience, to immediately compete for points.
And yet, it can be considered an important achievement that both cars of the new American team reached the finish line of the Chinese Grand Prix, albeit a lap behind the leader. Bottas finished in 13th place, while his teammate came in 15th and was the last to complete the entire race distance.
Mario Andretti, the 1978 world champion, hopes that the team will progress throughout the season. The legendary driver, after whom Cadillac F1 named its first chassis MAC-26, participated in the Drive to Wynn podcast and shared his thoughts:
"We finished the first race, and our second Grand Prix has certainly gone better, as both cars completed the entire race distance in China. The gap in qualifying was no longer four seconds, but two. Of course, that is still a lot, but it is some improvement.
With the transition to the new technical regulations, all teams in the championship face challenges, but at the same time, opportunities may arise. We must remain realistic, although, of course, throughout the season we want to see progress. I hope that closer to the end of the championship, we will start regularly contending for points, but it cannot be ruled out that we might achieve even more. Therefore, we must set ambitious goals.
Personally, I have always done this, even though I was sometimes laughed at. But that is the only way to achieve something, as to win, it is important to strive to be one of those who have a key influence on race results."
