Formula E is preparing for its debut race in Madrid.
Today at the Circuito de Madrid Jarama, located 32 km from the Spanish capital, the stage of the World Championship for electric car racing will take place for the first time.
In its time, this historic track hosted Formula 1 races – from 1968 to 1981, the Spanish Grand Prix was held there nine times, after which the track continued to be actively used for races of other series.
Although Formula E stages have never taken place in Jarama, before last season the track hosted tests for the electric series when Valencia was affected by flooding, making it impossible to hold them at the Ricardo Tormo circuit.
The Formula E teams had not much information about the track in Jarama, and they tried to compensate for this with intensive work on simulators. But yesterday, practice sessions began, and the teams and drivers started preparing for the stage at this racetrack, built in the late 60s by the famous Dutch architect John Hugenholtz, who also designed the track in Suzuka.
Formula E uses a circuit configuration of 3934 m with 14 turns. The best time in yesterday's practice was set by British driver Dan Ticktum, a racer for the Cupra Kiro team.
