Montoya: Adrian Newey should stick to his job.

Juan-Pablo Montoya believes that Adrian Newey should focus solely on solving engineering problems and not try to combine the role of technical director with the responsibilities of team principal at Aston Martin.

Undoubtedly, the former Formula 1 driver, who at one time finished third in the championship twice and in 2005 still encountered Newey at McLaren, is not alone in his opinion that appointing the brilliant designer to an administrative position was a mistake.

"There is a saying that if you are a shoemaker, your job is to deal with boots," the Colombian told RacingNews365. "In my opinion, this is exactly the case with Newey. Can he handle leading the team? Probably, he can. But I believe he is primarily a specialist in engineering, and politics is not his thing.

I think the team principal should be a very wise person who understands politics well. I think that’s why Toto Wolff is so successful in everything – he manages to achieve it all."

The start of the season for Aston Martin can only be described as a failure, and the team's problems are primarily related to the new Honda power units, which have proven to be unreliable, and their effectiveness also leaves much to be desired. But the AMR26 chassis is also not working perfectly, and of course, if Adrian Newey had focused solely on solving technical issues, it would have been much more beneficial for the team.

Even if it is confirmed that Jonathan Wheatley's departure from the Audi factory team is primarily related to Lawrence Stroll offering him the position of head of Aston Martin F1, he will not be able to take up the role of team principal anytime soon – only after the mandatory "gardening leave," which usually lasts no less than six months.
