Honda made advances in the reliability of its batteries.

Dr. Helmut Marko has disclosed that he has been in communication with Adrian Newey and indicated that his former colleague is facing difficulties as Aston Martin endures a rocky start to 2026. "I’ve been in contact with him," said the retired Red Bull advisor in an interview with Osterreich. "He’s not doing well. There are issues with this project that won't be resolved quickly."

These remarks come as Aston Martin contends with a challenging debut season powered by Honda, with concerns about performance, reliability, and management all under examination. Newey is already retreating from his unusual role as team principal to concentrate on technical leadership, while the pursuit of a more typical figure, such as Jonathan Wheatley, is complicated by contractual matters involving an extended gardening leave.

Meanwhile, Honda arrives at its home race in Suzuka under pressure to demonstrate improvement following a crisis related to vibrations that has impacted both performance and reliability. Chief engineer Shintaro Orihara noted some advancements have been made but not sufficient. "In China, we made progress in battery reliability by reducing vibrations affecting the systems, but we must find more solutions to determine the cause," he stated. "We also used the time between China and Japan to continue enhancing our reliability, but our performance indicators are still not at the desired level, especially concerning energy management." Orihara acknowledged that expectations for Suzuka remain low. "We’re not where we’d like to be this weekend, but we’ll keep working hard to maximize our potential," he stated.

The April break, initiated by the cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian races, is viewed internally as both a challenge and an opportunity. "The break has two sides," remarked Aston Martin’s Mike Krack. "Accumulating mileage is important, but not testing allows for a focus on factory work without the pressure of a schedule."

Behind the scenes, there are indications that some teams are advocating for additional testing allowances to speed up development. Concurrently, Felipe Massa, a former teammate of Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, suggests that 2026 could prove to be one of Alonso's most difficult seasons. "Unfortunately, this will likely be one of Fernando’s worst years," he expressed to Jugones. "He will need a lot of patience now, but that’s not easy at 44." Former Haas team principal Gunther Steiner concurs that the situation might have repercussions for Alonso, stating, "If he doesn’t see real progress, he’ll quit after the season ends. That certainly won’t be enjoyable. It’s been the worst year since he arrived."
