This week, Chevy revealed a wealth of information about the 2027 Corvette. While the introduction of a new V8 engine is the major highlight for many, the upcoming model year also brings back one of the most beloved enthusiast-focused Corvette variants: the Grand Sport.
Historically (dating back to the C2 generation), the Grand Sport has served as a bridge between the standard Corvette and the extreme creations produced by GM's performance teams. In this instance, the new Grand Sport will be positioned between the Stingray and the Corvette's high-performance models: the Z06, ZR1, and ZR1X.
To add further complexity, the new model comes in two variations. The standard gasoline-powered Grand Sport is derived from the Stingray, while a new, all-wheel-drive Grand Sport X—boasting 721 horsepower—takes over for the now-discontinued Corvette E-Ray, hybrid system included. We have all the specifics on the Grand Sport X right here, as it is essentially a distinct model.
For the standard Grand Sport, the approach remains unchanged: take the base drivetrain and enhance it with chassis improvements found on the upper-tier models. Thankfully, Chevy has recently upgraded the Stingray’s power with the new LS6 V8, allowing the Grand Sport to benefit from that too. The center-exit exhaust, once exclusive to the Z06 and ZR1, is now available. While it doesn’t provide extra power—remaining at 535 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque—it delivers an impressive sound. The traditional outboard-exit setup is still standard.
The standard model’s suspension is fine-tuned similarly to what you’d find from the Z51 package in the regular Stingray, though not precisely the same.
The Grand Sport has evolved through the generations (C2, C4, C6, C7, and C8) Byron Hurd
From there, customization is possible. The outcome can vary from a refined Stingray to something akin to a Z06, minus the larger engine. Options for carbon ceramic brakes? Absolutely. Aero enhancements? Indeed.
The Grand Sport will also feature distinctive aesthetics both inside and out. The signature “hash mark” detail is prominently featured, and Chevy indicates that buyers will have a wide array of personalization options for the interior and exterior.
Chevy intends to outline the Grand Sport’s optional packages and pricing as we approach its sale date later this year; we will keep you updated as new information arises.
