Oscar Piastri topped the protocol for the second session of free practice at the Japanese Grand Prix. After the session, the Australian McLaren driver expressed confidence that competitors would improve on Saturday.

Lando Norris lost time in the second practice due to a leak in the hydraulic system, but the team managed to resolve it, and the reigning world champion worked on the track.

Oscar Piastri (1st): "Overall, a decent day. We made good progress, especially in the second practice, which is encouraging. The mood is positive, and we gathered useful information that allows us to aim for high positions.

We know there's still work to be done, and it's clear that our competitors, especially Mercedes, are very strong. So all focus is on our own speed.

We hope to make further progress and maintain the pace we set today to be even more competitive."

Lando Norris (4th): "A challenging day – I couldn't complete the necessary number of laps. At the beginning of the second session, there was no opportunity to do more than one lap at a time, and in the morning we were testing aerodynamics, so the times can't be considered representative.

On tracks of this type, it's important to complete as many laps as possible to gain confidence and find the optimal setup, so right now I'm two or three steps behind, as I couldn't work on a long run, and the number of fast laps was also limited.

Given that, we still managed to do some things and learn, although not as much as we would have liked. In the evening, we'll analyze the data we've collected and try to fix some things, and tomorrow we'll aim to complete the necessary number of laps."
