FIA statement regarding the accident of Oliver Berman

On the 21st lap of the Japanese Grand Prix, Oliver Berman crashed into the barrier at the Spoon corner of the Suzuka track – the accident was triggered by the fact that the closing speed between the Haas and Alpine cars of Franco Colapinto, whom he was chasing, was too high. Specifically, the speed difference was 45 km/h. This, in turn, was due to the fact that the power unit in the Argentine's car had switched to battery recharge mode, while Berman was using the hybrid system's energy to accelerate. It all ended with him going off the track, and at the moment of impact with the barriers, the peak G-forces reached 50g. Fortunately, the Haas driver only suffered bruises, and no fractures were found, as indicated by the initial medical examination. After the race, the FIA published an official statement, which said: "Following the accident involving Oliver Berman at the Japanese Grand Prix, related to high closing speeds, the federation would like to make the following clarifications. Discussions regarding the 2026 regulations are ongoing with the involvement of the FIA, championship teams, power unit manufacturers, drivers, and FOM. The regulations initially included a number of parameters that needed to be adjusted, primarily related to energy consumption control, allowing for the optimization of the rules based on information obtained on the actual track. The essence of the principled position held by all stakeholders is that a thorough analysis will be conducted after the first stage of the season when sufficient information has been gathered. Thus, several meetings are scheduled for April to assess the new regulations, and a decision will be made on whether any clarifications are needed. Any adjustments, especially those related to energy consumption control, require careful verification and detailed analysis. The FIA will continue close and constructive cooperation with all stakeholders to develop the best possible solutions, with safety always remaining a fundamental element of the federation's mission. At this stage of the season, any speculation regarding the nature of potential changes would be premature. Further information will be released later."
