In recent years, the mandatory destination charges for new cars and trucks have been gradually increasing, especially for buyers of full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from Ford and General Motors. The two largest automakers are now levying a significant $2,795 fee to transport these vehicles from the factories to the dealerships.

TFL Truck first reported on the rise in destination charges, confirming through a survey of online configurators that the $2,795 fee currently affects full-size and heavy-duty pickups, as well as full-size SUVs, across various brands under the two manufacturers. This encompasses Lincoln along with the main Ford line, as well as both Chevrolet and GMC from GM. Cadillac imposes an even higher destination fee of $2,895 for the Escalade.

Destination charges have increased by up to 48% since 2021, as automakers have exhausted options to mask overall price hikes, and the current tariff situation exacerbates this issue. However, representatives from Ford and GM refrained from providing specific explanations for the recent increases, stating only that these fees reflect shipping costs and are always subject to fluctuations.

“These fees, which represent the cost of shipping vehicles from factory to dealer, are evaluated and adjusted as needed to stay aligned with the industry,” stated a Ford spokesperson, mentioning that the automaker determines an average to ensure consistent pricing nationwide, while noting that charges are lower for smaller vehicles (currently $1,495 for a Lincoln Corsair). These practices align with industry standards.

For GM, a company spokesperson commented, “We evaluate and modify destination and freight charges based on market conditions and costs.”

Ram and Toyota have lower destination charges, but not by a significant margin. As of the time of this writing, the destination fee for a Ram 1500 was $2,595, while Toyota charged $2,095 for shipping a Tundra from the factory. Although a difference of a few hundred dollars may seem minor compared to the overall cost of these trucks, it's possible that these two brands may increase their destination fees as well.
