Piastri: Right now, the podium for us is equivalent to a victory.
Oscar Piastri finished second in Suzuka and optimistically summed up the weekend...
Question: Oscar, great result, your third podium in Suzuka. What pleased you the most about the car's behavior? Oscar Piastri: I can't name just one thing, but this time I was able to start well. Throughout the weekend, we worked well, optimizing what we had. By the second practice, the car was fast, and we managed to maintain that pace until qualifying.
We understood well what we wanted from the power unit and how to set it up, and we worked a lot on the starts. Our starts in practice were very successful, and the speed was a pleasant surprise.
In the race, I had a good start, found myself on a clear track, and was able to pull away a bit from George before the pit stops. The strategy also worked. This time we did everything perfectly. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for the win, but at this moment, a podium is equivalent to a victory for us.
Question: Could you have won the race if it weren't for the safety car? Oscar Piastri: I would like to know that myself. We need to see if Kimi was faster than George or if he was going at the same speed. If he was going at the same speed, it would have been harder for me. Once on a clear track, Kimi was clearly faster than me. So I'm not sure I could have won the race, but I would really like to find out.
Question: Do you think Mercedes can be beaten? Oscar Piastri: We knew since last year that even if you have the best car, you still need to perform at the highest level. I think this time we performed excellently. The fact that I was able to hold George off for so long really inspired me. But we have no illusions. This weekend, we did everything right, but we still lost 15 seconds. I have no doubt that we will manage, but we have work to do.
Question: In the race, we witnessed a serious accident related to a large speed difference between the cars. We know that drivers have expressed their concerns about this. How important is it for some changes in the rules to happen before Miami? Oscar Piastri: We have been talking about this risk since the beginning of the development of these cars. Yes, we won't be able to do anything with the power units. There is no easy solution to this problem.
As far as I saw, Colapinto's super clipping indicator was not flashing, which raises concerns. I had a dangerous moment in practice with Nico when he caught up to me on the straight three times faster than I expected, while we were both on full throttle. We, as drivers, clearly have a lot to learn, and the place where the accident happened is where you don't expect someone to appear from behind with such a large speed difference. While we are learning, unfortunately, such things will happen.
But I think we understand that in our sport, a lot needs to be improved, a lot needs to change, especially in terms of safety, and some issues need to be addressed quite quickly.
Question: In Suzuka, you finished in the Grand Prix for the first time this year. How do you assess your result, how close were you to getting the most out of the car? Oscar Piastri: I think this weekend was one of the best of my career. We had great practices and qualifying, achieving our goal.
In the race, I had a good start, showed good speed, and our strategy was right. The safety car was an unfortunate interruption, but overall the race weekend went well. So yes, I am very pleased with my performance and the performance of the whole team.
But in the pits, Lando's weekend was complicated due to numerous issues. The start of the season has been challenging due to reliability problems, so we still have a lot to do, but in Japan, we showed that if everything goes according to plan, we can give our competitors a lot of trouble.
