Wolff has mixed feelings regarding Horner's return to F1.
"I’m unsure if he is navigating his way back."
Toto Wolff states that Christian Horner's current situation is, in part, self-induced, as speculation continues regarding the former Red Bull leader’s next steps. Horner has been associated with a potential purchase of the 24 percent stake in Alpine that is up for grabs, as well as a possible return to the pitwall at Aston Martin, although this may be hindered by Adrian Newey’s apparent hesitance to team up again. Wolff, whose Mercedes team is also considering the Alpine stake, dismissed any notions of a direct competition with Horner over this investment, despite their previous rivalry and discord. "Our interest in that stake is not connected to Christian," he stated to the Press Association. "The notion of rivalry between Christian and me regarding who buys an Alpine stake is fabricated."
Simultaneously, the Austrian implied that Horner's circumstances stem from years of confrontational behavior. "He has shattered quite a bit of glass, and those actions have consequences in our little world," Wolff remarked. "But that’s what he has done for his entire career, and that’s what he excels at." Despite their intense rivalry throughout the Mercedes-Red Bull period, Wolff acknowledged that the sport might be lacking Horner’s presence now. "I have mixed feelings about it," he replied when asked if Horner might return to the paddock. "The sport is lacking personalities. His personality was undoubtedly controversial, and that is beneficial for the sport. I told Fred Vasseur that we need ‘the good, the bad, and the ugly.’ Currently, only the good and the ugly remain. The bad is absent."
When asked if there might be a possibility for collaboration between him and Horner regarding the Alpine stake, the 54-year-old replied, "I don’t think so." Still, he adopted a more contemplative tone regarding their longstanding rivalry. "But even during my greatest frustrations and anger towards him, you have to remember that even your worst enemy has a best friend, so there must be some goodness. I don’t know if he is on his way back, and in what capacity. I certainly don’t wish him ill," he added.
