Sergio Perez is surprised by Aston Martin's problems.
Sergio Perez, racing for Cadillac F1 this year, is one of six drivers in the World Championship who have yet to score points. Valtteri Bottas, his teammate, also has none, but the American team is a newcomer to the championship, so it’s hardly surprising that they find themselves in an outsider position at the start.
On the other hand, Aston Martin: few expected this team to face such serious problems at the beginning of the season. Despite all the efforts being made both at their base in Silverstone and by Honda's engine suppliers, a solution will not be found anytime soon, as Fernando Alonso had to admit.
At the same time, Aston Martin has the most modern infrastructure, they have their budget in order, and since last year, Adrian Newey, a recognized genius in aerodynamics, has been working with the team. However, the AMR26 car, created under his guidance, suffers from severe vibrations that seem to come from the Honda power unit, as well as from the inefficiency and unreliability of the chassis as a whole.
"Honestly, I didn't expect this," Perez shared on the Spanish television channel DAZN. "I hoped that Fernando would be fighting for high positions, as I truly believed in this project that Adrian Newey joined. I worked with him and with the Honda engine suppliers at Red Bull Racing, but Formula 1 is a sport where any surprises are possible.
And now we are competing on equal terms with Fernando Alonso! At least we are not bored, there are still many races ahead, and participating in the championship brings us joy. Fernando and I always communicate, we always exchange jokes, and I tell him not to progress too quickly so that our interesting rivalry continues. And we will progress together!"
