Brandle: Russell must take Kimi seriously.
Former Formula 1 driver, popular expert and commentator Martin Brundle believes that George Russell should take the competition from Kimi Antonelli very seriously in the fight for the title…
Martin Brundle: “If I were George after three races, I would be much more worried than at the beginning of the season.
George spent several years at Williams gaining experience, then moved to Mercedes just as they stopped dominating. He managed to get through all that and finally got a championship car. It seemed like the title was within reach, but suddenly he looks around the pits and realizes: ‘Wait, this is far from guaranteed. I still have to beat this teenager.’
In fact, tough times have come for George; in the title fight, he must view Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton in his prime.
When Kimi crashed in Melbourne and then immediately succeeded, it was one of the most telling moments you can see in a young driver — the ability to switch gears and get back in the race right away.
I remember after the victory in China, Kimi's father and Toto Wolff said live on air: ‘Forget about the title fight, he still has a lot to learn, he will still make mistakes.’ And at that moment, it seemed to me that this completely matched my thoughts.
George is the favorite in this battle, as there will be wet races, restarts after safety cars, and all sorts of situations where George's experience will undoubtedly play a role. But watching Kimi in qualifying and races, it can be said that although he was lucky with the safety car in Japan, his speed was impressive.”
