Over time, I've established a solid set of criteria for evaluating side-by-sides at our modest abode. They need to be capable of hauling wood, towing reasonably sized trailers, and simplifying everyday tasks; otherwise, they're not worth it. Luckily, most UTVs available today can accomplish this and more, but the Kubota Sidekick stood out to me in a different way than others I’ve tested. The approach was unique, if not necessarily the outcome, and I appreciated it.

The Sidekick is quite different from the Polaris Ranger XD1500 I reviewed previously. It’s notably smaller, less powerful, and significantly more affordable at $20,000 compared to almost three times that amount for the Polaris. However, one key difference is its construction from metal, including the dump bed, which the Polaris lacks.

This reflects what Kubota prioritizes in a side-by-side compared to other brands. It's clear these guys typically build tractors, and I mean that in the most positive way. Not everything about the Sidekick is flawless, but I believe it's a worthwhile choice if you're in the market for a vehicle meant for real work. Just be prepared to forego some conveniences like a touchscreen radio.

      The Essentials

Alongside tractors, mowers, mini excavators, and skid steers, Kubota offers a selection of UTVs. The RTV520 is the smallest model, while the diesel RTV-X series offers the most robust options. The full-size Sidekick 850 gas version I tested occupies a spot in the middle of the range.

While brands like Can-Am and Polaris design their side-by-sides with a more aggressive aesthetic, Kubota adheres to the principle of Keep It Simple Stupid. Everything you see has a purpose and is not intended to appear extravagant—because it simply isn't.

Nonetheless, there's an extensive list of accessories available for these vehicles. My test model featured a steel brush guard, half-doors, and some stylish decals; others can be equipped with a full cab that includes speakers in the roof. The number of options you choose to add is entirely up to you, but I personally prefer the K.I.S.S. approach.

The engine is an 850cc four-stroke gasoline model producing 54 horsepower at 5,750 rpm. Power is directed through a CVT to either the rear wheels or all four, depending on your selection. The front differential is limited-slip, while the rear has a foot-operated locker—similar to what you'd find on a Kubota tractor.

      Driving the Kubota Sidekick

Understanding that this isn’t a luxury vehicle, I approached the Sidekick with a practical mindset. Its first task was transporting firewood I had cut at our family campground back to the house, where I have a log splitter. It wasn’t an extraordinary job, but it’s a typical task for anyone considering a vehicle like this.

Loading the Kubota was straightforward because it isn’t elevated on large tires. I’m a fairly tall individual at 6’5″, but the sides of the bed were noticeably lower than those on other machines I’ve tried. This was a pleasant surprise, especially since I had several piles of oak to deal with. Furthermore, since the bed is metal rather than plastic, I could toss those pieces of wood in without concern.

Unloading was a breeze thanks to the hydraulic bed lift. Not every Sidekick features this, but it’s an essential upgrade in my opinion; there's a strong chance it could be tougher than you are with a manual dump.

Typically, I would have towed a loaded canoe trailer with the UTV, but I tested it during the colder months when no one was out on the water—even though I do enjoy an occasional polar plunge.

The Sidekick turned out to be an excellent vehicle for moving around the property. I even deliberately put it in a few challenging situations to see how it would perform, and the drivetrain is exceptionally capable of getting you out of tricky spots. With a short wheelbase of just 80.5 inches, maneuvering in tight areas is no problem; however, it lacks the stability of machines with a larger footprint.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well it navigated our property, which consists mainly of creek gravel, both packed and loose. The transmission includes a dedicated low range—ideal for working and off-roading—maximizing its 54 hp. There was one obstacle it couldn't handle—a long-dead tree that was too heavy for us to move. The approach angle presented an issue, as the bumper hit the log before the tires could engage.

Overall, I didn’t push the Kubota to its absolute limits. I used it just as a typical owner would. In that

It may not be flashy like a luxury Polaris, but it gets the job done. That's really what you expect from one of these, right?
