Jos responds to the rumors of a 'done deal' between Verstappen and Mercedes.
A straightforward reply to those assertions
Jos Verstappen has dismissed new rumors suggesting that Max Verstappen's potential transition to Mercedes is already practically settled. As speculation intensifies regarding the four-time world champion’s possible move to the German team—partly fueled by his increasing associations through GT3 racing—Dutch analyst Jack Plooij even claimed he heard directly that the agreement is nearly finalized. Jos Verstappen's reaction was direct. "He should consult an ENT specialist or just have his ears cleaned," he supposedly remarked on social media. This denial comes as chatter continues about Max Verstappen’s long-term prospects beyond Red Bull, especially considering the team’s challenges with the 2026 regulations that he openly dislikes.
Outside of Formula 1, however, the Verstappen family remains heavily involved in motorsport, albeit in various disciplines. In an interview with the Dutch magazine Formule 1, Jos revealed that he now prefers rallying over his previous F1 career. "I enjoy this more now," he stated. "I don’t have to drive a Formula 1 car anymore. Not even for a few laps, and I don’t need to. I did it, and it was wonderful." Instead, he finds great pleasure in watching his son compete. "What’s happening in the family now is much more beautiful to me. When I watch Max, I experience as much joy as when I was driving myself. I find this much more thrilling."
Jos has even attempted to persuade Max to try rallying, though he has not been successful so far. "No, driving GT3 at the Nurburgring is harmless," he chuckled. "He just needs to come and try rallying at some point. For this, 'Max, please!' Then he’ll see it differently." He noted, "He always mentions the trees, but eventually, you stop seeing those trees. You know they’re there and take them into consideration, but you don’t focus on them. It’s crucial that you know they exist."
