Pedro de la Rosa: A bright success awaits the race in Madrid
Yesterday in Madrid, Pedro de la Rosa participated in the opening ceremony of the Arcade F1 center, where the public can try their hand at a professional racing simulator, and spoke with the Spanish press.
Of course, the increased interest in Formula 1 is related to the September Grand Prix of Spain, which will take place this year at the new MadRing racetrack.
"I must say, I am impressed by the atmosphere of general excitement surrounding the upcoming F1 race in Madrid," said the former driver, now serving as a representative for the Aston Martin F1 team, in an interview with Marca. "In my opinion, the anticipation is only heightened by the fact that the Grand Prix in Madrid hasn't taken place for many years. I sincerely believe that I am lucky to witness this event.
I think the new race is set for great success. The organizers of this stage show tremendous attention to all the details. The fact that two Grand Prix will take place in a European country is simply incredible. Especially considering that in countries like France and Germany, with their strong economies, Formula 1 races are not held at all. We should appreciate that Spain will host two stages of the World Championship and not take it for granted.
Moreover, we have two magnificent drivers, which is almost 10% of the participants. I think this can also be considered a significant success, given the level of investment made in Formula 1 in our country thanks to Spanish companies.
Speaking of MadRing, races on urban and semi-permanent tracks usually take place quite vividly because the audience here always perceives speed better. But regular racetracks have their advantages, including the fact that races on urban tracks always carry additional risks.
The Madrid ring features the famous turn La Monumental, and of course, Aston Martin will pay special attention to this turn in preparation for the upcoming race. But there are other sections on the new track that are probably even more interesting.
Our team continues to work intensively with Honda's engine manufacturers, trying to improve the car and solve the problem of increased vibrations. Additionally, we will see what the pace of our progress will be in the upcoming races."
As discussions are ongoing in Formula 1 involving the championship organizers, FIA, and all teams regarding possible changes to the 2026 regulations, de la Rosa touched on this topic as well: "The spectacle of racing is one thing, and whether you like a 'more electric' Formula 1 or not is all subjective, but safety is always a priority, that is not up for debate. It is clear that we need to try to take action so that there is not such a stark difference in speeds in braking zones.
But I am confident that the regulations will be amended correctly to enhance safety. In any case, we should be grateful to the FIA, as Formula 1 has never been this safe. In recent years, measures have been taken that save lives. I don’t know what measures will be taken now, but I am sure that the level of safety in Formula 1 will increase in the upcoming races."
