It's been an exciting week for Nissan Xterra enthusiasts. Loyal fans of the brand may be rewarded with the return of the beloved nameplate in 2028.
On Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, Chairman of Nissan Americas Christian Meunier announced that the new Xterra will be factory-equipped to handle tires up to 35 inches, and “likely 37 or even larger in the aftermarket.”
Nissan North America’s Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Ponz Pandikuthira added that “The vehicle will act as a canvas. We’ll make it so adaptable that the aftermarket can easily add lift kits and larger wheels and tires, fender flares, and more.”
Meunier emphasized, “We will work closely with aftermarket companies to ensure the vehicle can be customized in ways we typically can't do at the factory. I hope to showcase it at SEMA next year to generate excitement and interest in the aftermarket.”
Earlier that day, Meunier teased the Xterra with a new image, quoting “Badass is back.”
On Monday, we got our first glimpse of the front of the Xterra, which appears rugged, boxy, and contemporary.
Nissan has confirmed that the Xterra will be a body-on-frame SUV offered with a V6 and a hybrid V6, without a turbo-four option. It is also expected to come with four-wheel drive and a 2-speed transfer case.
In November, The Drive reported exclusively that the Xterra will be priced below $40,000 upon its launch in 2028, a figure that Meunier reaffirmed on Wednesday, stating, “I’ll provide an Xterra with everything you need, nothing you don’t, which is a slogan from 2002 that we believe still fits our brand.”
Nissan is currently undergoing a turnaround strategy aimed at simplifying their lineup, reducing expenses, and retaining their best offerings. Newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa stated in February that “Nissan is back” for enthusiasts. So far, developments appear promising for fans and the brand’s devoted supporters.
Only time will tell.
