It’s an exciting week for fans of the Nissan Xterra, as loyal supporters may have something to celebrate with the anticipated return of this iconic model in 2028.
On Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, Christian Meunier, Chairman of Nissan Americas, confirmed that the forthcoming Xterra will come equipped from the factory for tires up to 35 inches, with the possibility of fitting 37-inch tires or larger through aftermarket modifications.
Following Meunier’s announcements about tire sizes, Nissan North America Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer Ponz Pandikuthira stated, “The car will be a canvas, right? We will make it so that it's easy for the aftermarket to enhance it with lift kits, larger wheels and tires, fender flares, and so on.”
Meunier added, “We will proactively collaborate with the aftermarket to ensure the car can be customized in ways that we typically can’t provide from the factory. Ideally, I want to showcase it at SEMA next year to generate interest and excitement within the aftermarket community.”
Earlier that day, Meunier hinted at the Xterra's return with a second image, captioned with the phrase “Badass is back.”
On Monday, we got our first glimpse of the front of the Xterra, which has a robust, blocky, and contemporary design.
Nissan has confirmed that the Xterra will be a body-on-frame SUV offered with a V6 engine and a hybrid V6, with no turbo-four engines in sight. We can likely expect a four-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case.
In November, The Drive reported exclusively that the Xterra will be priced under $40,000 upon its release in 2028. Meunier reiterated this pricing on Wednesday, stating, “I’m going to bring an Xterra with everything you need, and nothing you don’t,” echoing the slogan used in 2002, which they believe aligns with the brand’s identity.
Nissan is currently undergoing a turnaround strategy aimed at streamlining its lineup, reducing costs, and retaining the essential elements. Newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa told The Drive that the message to enthusiasts is “Nissan is back” as of February. So far, developments appear to be positively impacting fans and loyal customers of the brand.
Time will tell.
