'Change is necessary' as discussions of Verstappen's departure increase.

Max Verstappen has reiterated his concerns regarding the future of Formula 1, stating that he might consider stepping away from the sport if it does not evolve. In light of ongoing discussions with the FIA and F1 leadership aimed at addressing the problematic 2026 regulations, Verstappen acknowledges that progress is being made, albeit limited. "The fact that we are discussing it is already a step forward," he told Viaplay. "The issue is that while some adjustments can be made to the regulations, fundamentally, something is amiss. Not everyone is willing to admit this publicly, but it is true."

The four-time world champion emphasized that he is actively voicing his opinions behind the scenes. "I’m just trying to make adjustments. Even if I decide to leave in a few years, I want the sport to still be respectable." He added, "Certain individuals are currently capitalizing on the regulations and trying to exploit them. For me, my love for true Formula 1 remains. Even if I step away in two or three years, I hope future drivers will also find joy in it." However, he clarified that he is not prepared to commit to Formula 1 beyond those two or three years. "For me to continue, there would need to be changes regarding the regulations," the Dutchman said.

Verstappen also mentioned a long-term solution as F1 looks to finalize its next engine formula later this year. "I would prefer the return of V10 or V8 engines." His views have been supported by those around him. Nelson Piquet Jr., whose sister Kelly is in a relationship with Max, told Soy Motor that Verstappen's motivation stems from pure passion, not financial gain. "Max is very genuine – he speaks his mind. He’s not in it for the money; he’s there for the sport, the challenge, because he enjoys it," he stated. "If he no longer feels that way, he might opt for something else. He’s someone who knows what he wants and follows his instincts."

Piquet suggested that taking a break from the sport is a real possibility. "If things don’t change, he may decide he wants to pursue something different, and when he regains his enjoyment, he’ll come back. Knowing Max, if he loses his passion for the sport and doesn’t feel challenged, there’s a strong chance he’ll seek other opportunities."

Another former driver, Mika Salo, concurs that losing Verstappen would be significant, but not catastrophic for Formula 1. "It would be a considerable loss. I appreciate his driving style; he races aggressively and is incredibly skilled. It would be a setback for F1, but a gain for other series," he told Ilta Sanomat. However, he provided a straightforward reality check. "If you’re unhappy, then find another path. I don’t think F1 will change because of one individual. The sport continues to evolve, despite many champions having retired."

Salo suggested that both Red Bull's struggles and the characteristics of the new cars might be affecting Verstappen. "I believe that the new cars and the underperforming Red Bull are the key issues. I doubt the multiple champion feels highly motivated to race in 10th place."
