Verstappen approved Lambiase's move to McLaren.
Max Verstappen has stated that he personally encouraged Gianpiero Lambiase to accept McLaren’s offer, even though this decision marks the end of one of Formula 1’s most successful partnerships. Lambiase, who is currently Verstappen’s long-time race engineer at Red Bull, will take on the role of Head of Racing at McLaren no later than 2028—a timeline that coincidentally aligns with the expiration of Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull.
During a Viaplay event in Amsterdam, Verstappen emphasized his direct involvement in the decision. "He informed me about the offer he received, and I told him, ‘You would be foolish not to take it’," he said. "We have already accomplished everything together, and receiving such a fantastic offer, considering his family and the security it would provide, is significant. He sought my approval, and I told him he definitely should go for it. He was looking for that affirmation from me."
The Dutch driver highlighted the strength of their relationship and suggested that their collaboration may not be over. "I have a very good relationship with GP," Verstappen remarked. "And who knows, perhaps in the future we will collaborate again outside of Formula 1. We are lifelong friends, and we're still young. It was an incredible offer that ensures security for his family, which is an important factor to consider. Thus, I assured him he must take it wholeheartedly, which is exactly what he wanted to hear."
Despite previously indicating he might leave Red Bull or even the sport if Lambiase left, Verstappen insists he is accepting of the change. "I don’t hold it against him," he said. "That way, I’m not feeling too down. In terms of racing, it doesn’t bother me that much because we’ve accomplished so much together. I can’t tell him, ’No, I want you to stay here.’ Everyone has their own dreams and aspirations."
While McLaren has officially named Lambiase as their Head of Racing, it is widely believed that this position could evolve into a future team principal role, especially with the possibility of Andrea Stella returning to Ferrari.
