If you own a General Motors HD truck from the early 2000s, it’s not truly complete without a set of PYO wheels. Their short, slotted spokes were iconic to the ’00s aesthetic, much like tribal arm tattoos. If a factory set is out of reach, an Illinois fabrication shop is producing replicas.

Wehrli Custom Fabrication offers a set of forged aluminum PYO-style wheels measuring 17×8.5 inches. This size is one inch taller and two inches wider than the original specs, featuring a +18 offset and 5.5-inch backspacing, with options for polished, powder-coated, or epoxy primer finishes. The standard price for a set is $3,196, but they were listed at $2,876 at the time of publication.

The increased size aligns better with modern tire dimensions; Wehrli indicates these wheels can fit 33s or 35s without deforming. Available bolt patterns include 8×6.5 for GMT800 and early GMT900 HD trucks, as well as 6×5.5 for half-ton models.

The GMT800 and GMT900 platforms are now considered modern classics. The GMT800 was utilized for GM’s full-size and heavy-duty pickups and SUVs from 1999 to 2006 (though the GMT800-based Hummer H2 was available for a few years beyond that), while the GMT900 platform took precedence from 2007 until the 2013 model year.

Trucks built on both platforms featured streamlined designs that made them ideal for the flourishing show-truck trend of the time. They also had a simpler design compared to later models, which began incorporating modern infotainment technology. Additionally, these platforms were the foundation for the Chevrolet Avalanche and Cadillac Escalade EXT, which introduced the midgate that is now reappearing in GM's current electric trucks.

PYO wheels are as legendary as the trucks they originally came with. It’s exciting to see them return, and with the enhancement of forged aluminum and updated dimensions, they’re an even greater option than before.
