Montoya: Mercedes does not share its tricks with McLaren.
Juan-Pablo Montoya believes that McLaren will need time before they can understand the features of the new Mercedes power unit in Woking and learn to work with it as effectively as the factory team of the Stuttgart concern. By the way, Andrea Stella recently spoke about the fact that customer teams are doomed to inevitably lag behind the factory teams at the beginning of the cycle when Formula 1 transitioned to a new technical regulation. In Montoya's opinion, Mercedes engine manufacturers will not share all their secrets with McLaren, even though the teams formally use the same power units. "There are a number of systems developed by Mercedes that they supply to customer teams, but you have to figure out how to work with them yourself," the former Formula 1 driver said in an interview with AS Colombia. "This can be compared to a situation where, in a painting class, you have to copy the 'Mona Lisa,' but you are only given colored chalks. At the first stage, you will inevitably find yourself in an unfavorable position, but that’s normal because one team develops and produces the engines itself, while the other is just its customer. You are supplied with exactly the same equipment, and the hardware is indeed absolutely identical, however, not all information on how to use it will be shared with you. You will generally be explained how the power unit works, but there are certain tricks and special approaches that each team must figure out on their own. However, figuring this out is not that difficult, as you can obtain a large amount of telemetry data and see much of what other teams are doing... Therefore, after some time, McLaren will again regularly contend for victories in all races."
