Russell optimistic about Mercedes' future despite Verstappen discussions.
"It's a contract that spans multiple years and extends over several seasons."
George Russell emphasizes his expectation to stay with Mercedes beyond 2026, despite increasing rumors regarding Max Verstappen possibly entering the market. Although only next season is officially secured in his current agreement, Russell believes that the performance clauses associated with his contract are unlikely to pose a problem. "You achieve the targets and move forward. So, I’ll be here with the team next year, and that’s that. There’s really nothing more to discuss," he stated. "It’s a multi-year contract. It lasts for several years, and as we mentioned last year—much like typical contracts—if the targets aren’t met, you still continue if both parties are content. But as I mentioned, the targets will most likely be achieved."
The Brit is currently engaged in an early-season competition with teammate and championship front-runner Kimi Antonelli, who has claimed two victories from pole position in the season's initial races. Nevertheless, Russell affirms that team relations remain stable. "Our relationship is completely normal; the championship isn’t a point of contention between us. We simply ensure that we keep Mercedes at the forefront together," he remarked. "Firstly, they will absolutely provide both of us with equal opportunities. That has always been the case at Mercedes, starting from Nico Rosberg's time. Naturally, I hope it’s just the two of us contending for the championship, but I don’t want to jump ahead."
Looking ahead to Miami, Russell is concentrating on addressing key weaknesses. "As I mentioned, I aim to maximize every race, which includes improving my starts. That’s precisely what we’re focusing on now—we’ve already instituted some changes to the procedure." Antonelli, for his part, asserts that the team dynamic remains strong despite the championship contest. "The break was too lengthy; I want to return to racing. Nothing has changed with Russell—our relationship is solid," he told La Repubblica. "Our bond is strong and remains unchanged. We respect each other greatly. However, it's evident that I can be a contender. I aspire to win races and championships; that’s my objective. Both George and I have a tremendous opportunity with such a robust car, and neither of us wants to squander it."
He added that both drivers are aware of the larger goal for Mercedes. "We have individual targets, but we understand we must support the team in winning the Constructors’ Championship," Antonelli stated. "I’m confident that my relationship with George is excellent and will stay that way throughout the season." Meanwhile, Dr. Helmut Marko believes Toto Wolff is already strategizing for the future Mercedes lineup, which could potentially feature an all-Austrian team. "Yes, his son (Jack) is truly a speedster in go-karting, very much like Johan, Gerhard Berger’s son," Marko mentioned to Osterreich. "I maintain constant contact with Gerhard via phone."
