The latest in car news and reviews, no nonsense

I’ve nearly become desensitized to the high prices of collector cars. Spend enough time with salespeople, and you’ll realize that something's value is determined solely by what someone is willing to pay. Some individuals are simply more inclined to spend large amounts of money than others. A prime example: This 2017 Dodge Viper GTC ACR-Extreme with just 44 miles that recently sold for $532,999.

That caught my attention, so I reached out to Chad Cunningham, CEO of duPont Registry Live, which conducted the auction. He regularly witnesses significant sales of luxury vehicles, and I asked if he had ever seen a Viper approach such a price before.

“We have had some outstanding results on Gen 5 Vipers at duPont Registry Live, but this is the highest so far,” Cunningham replied. “It sets a digital auction record for a Viper, so it's an incredible outcome for a remarkable car.”

The unique details make this black-and-yellow track powerhouse particularly special. It's a one-of-one with this paint scheme and is thought to be the only 2017 model featuring a single center stripe. Additionally, the Extreme Aero Package is a significant advantage; although you won't see the prominent front splitter and rear diffusers attached, that's because Dodge shipped them separately. They were included in the sale, and as Cunningham explained, the Viper is “billed, paid, and about to ship out.”

“This one had everything,” Cunningham added. “It was a consignment from a local client, featuring a one-of-one build, low mileage, and no modifications. It has set a new benchmark for future A+ Viper examples like this.”

A glance at the car’s window sticker reveals a factory MSRP of $154,085. Whether the original owner actually paid that amount remains uncertain. Regardless, you can be sure that this investment has proven to be lucrative for them.

For those interested, this sale surpasses the previous record for the most expensive fifth-gen Viper sold on Bring a Trailer by $130,999. It is almost hard to believe that another Viper could ever exceed this figure, but stranger things have indeed occurred. Every year, it seems more people long for the stick-shift, V10 powerhouse. I just can’t help but wonder if a better example is still out there.

Will we ever witness a fifth-generation Viper being sold for a higher price? It seems unlikely, but then again, not many could have predicted this outcome.
