WEC: The McLaren hypercar will be called MCL-HY

In 2027, the McLaren factory team will return to the top tier of the World Endurance Championship – in the Hypercar class, as announced a year ago when the McLaren United AS team was formed.

Now in Woking, they have settled on the name of their sports prototype, developed by McLaren Racing and McLaren Automotive, the company's automotive division, with the participation of Dallara: the new car has been designated MCL-HY. These hypercars will take to the starting line of the next WEC season and will also participate in the "24 Hours of Le Mans."

The name reflects the traditions established by the Formula 1 team, but the abbreviation MCL has been supplemented with the letters HY, defining the type of car created for endurance racing – in recent years, this category of motorsport has been experiencing a new renaissance.

The full name of the small-series road version of the hypercar is MCL-HY GTR, and this too pays homage to the team's traditions, as in 1995, the McLaren F1 GTR won the Le Mans marathon on its first attempt. Moreover, four McLaren F1 GTRs were in the top five at the end of that race.

In modern times, the GTR designation has been assigned to the fastest models from McLaren Automotive – P1 GTR and Senna GTR. A full-scale presentation of the McLaren MCL-HY hypercar is scheduled for May 4.

James Barclay, Executive Director of McLaren Endurance Racing: "The return of the McLaren name to the top category of endurance racing is a significant milestone, and the time has come to announce the name of our new hypercar, which will continue the traditions established by the incredibly successful racing cars from McLaren.

We are witnessing a golden era in sports car racing, and the Hypercar category continues to develop extremely successfully – the name of our car underscores the respect we feel in this regard.

Ahead of the initial testing of the MCL-HY, we will present an incredibly impressive version of the hypercar's design, in which it will take to the track during testing."
