Next year will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Williams’ last Formula 1 championship, making it a perfect moment to explore cryptocurrency and consider adding a piece of automotive history to your garage. Featured in a sealed-bid RM Sotheby’s auction, this Williams FW19 was sidelined during the 1997 season but was tested by both Heinz-Harald Frentzen and the eventual drivers’ champion Jacques Villeneuve during that notable year.

Following the tragic death of Ayrton Senna in 1994 and the rise of Michael Schumacher as a recurring rival (first at Benetton and then at Ferrari), Williams dominated Formula 1 for much of the 1990s. Their innovative active-ride cars propelled Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost to championships in 1992 and 1993, respectively. The team came close to claiming the 1994 championship with Damon Hill, who ultimately won it in 1996 before departing due to a contract dispute. This opened the door for Villeneuve—son of the legendary F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve and already a winner at the Indy 500 as well as a CART champion—to join Williams in 1997.

The car that enabled Villeneuve to secure his only F1 championship was built on the same impressive foundation of Renault V10 power and Adrian Newey’s design expertise that had brought Williams such success until then. Villeneuve and Frentzen drove this car to eight victories, 11 pole positions, nine fastest laps, and 15 podium finishes over 17 races, culminating in a championship showdown at Jerez, where Schumacher crashed into Villeneuve, ending up stranded in a gravel trap.

This signified a true turning point. Newey transitioned to McLaren for the 1998 season, and Renault ceased its factory engine program. Williams then relied on modified versions of Renault’s engines before partnering with BMW in 2000. However, the landscape had shifted significantly, and Williams would not win again until 2012, which remains its most recent victory.

The auction features the sixth of six built FW19 chassis that saw action (a seventh chassis was finished but never tested or raced). Commencing in June 1997, it participated in testing sessions at Magny Cours, Silverstone, Monza, and Barcelona. Aside from those in-season tests and a post-season run in Barcelona, the car was retired to the Williams Heritage collection. It underwent a complete restoration in 2017 and was sold to its current owner by the team in 2019. Since then, it has only been driven for 107 miles, well below the 621-mile threshold requiring another rebuild, as stated in the auction listing.

RM Sotheby’s anticipates FW19 chassis number six will fetch between 1.1 million and 1.5 million British pounds, roughly translating to about $1.4 million to $2.0 million based on current exchange rates. While vintage F1 cars can command significantly higher prices, this may be indicative of this car's limited competitive history. Regardless of its final sale price, it serves as a crucial reminder of Williams’ former glory.
