2026 regulations permitting greater creativity than anticipated

"We anticipated that the regulations would be fairly stringent."

Rob Marshall, the chief designer at McLaren, mentions that the 2026 regulations of Formula 1, which have received considerable criticism, actually provide much more design flexibility than what engineers initially thought. "We anticipated that the regulations would be quite stringent," he stated. "In the past, there were significant amounts of data documented on paper, which somewhat defined the framework that had to be adhered to. Now, there are countless intricate CAD models, and at first glance, it appears considerably more challenging to exercise creativity using them since the model dictates the machine's design."

However, Marshall observed that the reality across the grid has been quite different. "When I examined the cars of other teams, they utilized quite diverse solutions, some of which were particularly intriguing." He highlighted a few notable concepts.

"Audi’s sidepods are quite fascinating. They’ve implemented a unique solution, and there’s nothing else quite like it. We assumed they would merely reuse something standard, but clearly, that wasn’t the case."

"The suspension geometry on the Aston Martin is very intriguing. The rear design is quite ambitious and exceptionally interesting. There’s definitely a reason for interest there. The front suspension is also noteworthy, and it may have drawn inspiration from something we developed last year."

Marshall also mentioned Ferrari’s innovations. "The rear wing – everyone looked at it and thought, ‘Oh, I see, no issue.’" He referred to the so-called 'Macarena' solution, which has reportedly also been evaluated by Red Bull. "So I inquired whether it was truly legal, and they reassured me, 'No problem.'"

"The exhaust vents also include some clever design features that caught everyone's attention, prompting thoughts like, 'This is rather intriguing.'"

"The front wings are also quite distinctive, showcasing various shapes among the teams. While it was expected that all front wings would appear similar, that’s not the case at all."
