"He remains just as significant for us outside of racing."

Mattia Binotto has expressed his support for veteran Nico Hulkenberg, stating that the German still has "a lot to prove" even at 38 years old. "I’ve never seen Nico as focused as he has been in recent months," said Binotto, the head of the newly rebranded full Audi works team, in an interview with Sport Bild. "It’s evident that he is enjoying this project and the new car. He feels at ease in it."

"I can’t picture him retiring from racing and ending his career anytime soon. Nico still has much to demonstrate. Age doesn’t seem to be an issue; his lap times are impressive." Binotto also emphasized Hulkenberg’s off-track impact in Audi’s new Formula 1 initiative. "Nico is a fantastic person. He’s a very skilled driver, but his value off the track is equally significant to us," he stated. "He’s reliable and a leader within the team. He accomplishes this not just through words but by his actions. He sets a great example for everyone."

At the same time, the Italian praised teammate Gabriel Bortoleto, whose early stint in F1 has drawn attention in the paddock. "Gabi is incredibly fast and already exhibits a true leader’s disposition," Binotto noted. "Having a teammate who has participated in over 250 Grands Prix is ideal," he added.

Spanish media reports indicate that the situation at Audi is not favorable for Carlos Sainz, who is facing challenges in his second year at Williams after a particularly tough start to 2026. Team principal James Vowles acknowledges that improvements are necessary. "It hasn’t been the season start we hoped for, but the key is to see how we respond to the challenges," he remarked. "Miami presents the chance to showcase our next step forward, though it won’t be the finished product," Vowles said, referring to plans for a significant upgrade that is reportedly set to include a lighter chassis.
