Alessandro Leone Zanardi passed away on May 1—ironically, a day already marked by sadness for racing enthusiasts globally—at the age of 59. The specific cause of death was not disclosed, although a statement from the Zanardi family noted that, while unexpected, it was peaceful.
“It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Alessandro Zanardi on May 1,” stated Zanardi’s family, according to the BBC. “Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of family and friends. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone showing support during this time and requests that their sorrow and privacy be respected as they mourn.”

Zanardi, who competed in various racing categories from endurance to rally, is best remembered for his exceptional performance in American open-wheel racing, including CART and Formula 1. After enduring a catastrophic crash at the Lausitzring on September 15, 2001, which resulted in the loss of both his legs, Zanardi astonishingly returned to racing in the World Touring Car Championship a few years later. Even more remarkably, he achieved the status of a Paralympic champion, winning the New York Marathon, World Championships, and the London Paralympics in 2012. He earned two gold medals and one silver during his career.
Tragedy struck again in June 2020 when he was involved in a serious accident while participating in a hand bike race in Italy. He reportedly lost control of his bike, veering into oncoming traffic and crashing into a truck. He was airlifted to a local hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries and remained in intensive care for an extended duration. As noted by Motorsport.com, this incident led to various complications, resulting in his frequent hospitalizations. The full extent of his injuries was never publicly disclosed, but they were considered quite severe.

Zanardi lived a quiet life in Italy with his family, and I can only wish that his final years were fulfilling. He achieved so much and served as an immense inspiration, making it only fitting that he left this world with a smile and his head held high.
Rest in peace, champion.
