Mercedes is looking for insights from McLaren while Ferrari awaits a decision regarding the engine.
Mercedes is reportedly seeking clarification from customer team McLaren following the team's impressive performance gain in Miami. As stated by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mercedes engineers have reached out to McLaren for further details on how they are handling the latest version of the Mercedes power unit, specifically regarding the software aspects.
The situation is particularly ironic as McLaren representatives had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the limited guidance from Mercedes on effectively utilizing the intricate new 2026 systems. Miami highlighted the existing hierarchy among engine manufacturers, with La Gazzetta dello Sport noting that McLaren’s progress came not just from upgrades, but also from their apparent improvement in understanding and managing the software.
This has reportedly piqued Mercedes' interest. Meanwhile, Ferrari's attention is increasingly on the FIA’s upcoming ADUO decision, which could enable underperforming manufacturers to narrow the gap. La Gazzetta has indicated that the benchmark has become clear. "These are correction margins based on the deficit identified by the best engine," the publication commented. "The Mercedes, if there were any doubts."
"The intervention window is between 2 and 4 percent. We will soon see how much the Reds can adjust their engine." Other Italian media outlets have noted that Ferrari is already working on a potential upgrade package for the Belgian GP, contingent on ADUO concessions being approved.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur remains optimistic about the championship race despite Mercedes-powered teams distancing themselves in Miami. "Verstappen was in contention for the title last year, winning from Monza," he remarked. "I still believe in the championship."
Former 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg also feels Ferrari is on the verge of a breakthrough. "They’re lacking something to secure the wins, but they've significantly improved compared to last year," the ex-Mercedes driver said. "I think they'll be back to winning Grands Prix soon." Rosberg also noted that Lewis Hamilton appears to have found his footing after a challenging first season with Ferrari in 2025. "He seems to have finally adapted," the German stated.
